Frequently asked questions

About GoblinKnife, the solo tabletop RPG with an AI game master and three AI companions.

What is GoblinKnife?

A solo tabletop roleplaying game you play in your browser. An AI game master runs the world, three AI companions play beside you, and a rules engine compatible with fifth edition rolls the dice. You play one character, in a campaign written in full like a published adventure.

Can I play it now?

Not the full game yet: GoblinKnife hasn't launched. You can play a free five-minute demo now, and join the waitlist to get an email when your seat is ready.

Is the demo the real game?

The demo plays the opening of The Seventh Waking with real dice and real rules, but its story is pre-written: you pick from options, and every line is fixed. In the full game, you type whatever your character says or does, and the AI game master and companions answer.

Do I need to know the rules?

No. The game master explains a rule the first time it matters, and you can ask it anything out of character. If you already know fifth edition, you'll find the rules you know.

Is it compatible with fifth edition?

Yes. It plays by the 2024 rules in the System Reference Document 5.2, with every class, species and background in it. Today the engine fully automates levels 1 to 4.

Does the AI cheat on the dice?

It can't. Rolls come from the rules engine, the AI never decides a number, and every roll is shown on the table. Death saving throws are rolled honestly too, which is why a companion can die for real in The Seventh Waking.

Will it remember what happened?

Yes. The game keeps records of the world, the characters, what you’ve learned and what was promised, and writes down what's new after every turn. The game master's picture of the world is rebuilt from those records on every turn, so it doesn't drift.

Can I do anything I want?

You can try. Type what your character says or does; the game master works out how the world responds and calls for a roll when the outcome is uncertain. Before you do something that can’t be undone, like attacking a friend, it asks you to confirm.

What happens when I finish a campaign?

The campaign ends with an ending of its own, and you can bring a character you’ve played into another campaign. We're building the next step: a new campaign generated from how yours ended, written in full and checked before you play it.

How long does a campaign take?

The Seventh Waking takes about three and a half hours. Play it in one evening or in short sittings; the game keeps your place.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. GoblinKnife is made for phones first and runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer. There's nothing to install.

What languages does it support?

English and Traditional Chinese. The game master answers in the language you play in.

Can I undo a mistake?

Yes. You can rewind to before any turn.

Is GoblinKnife an official fifth-edition product?

No. It's an independent game, compatible with fifth edition, and not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast. It uses the SRD 5.2 under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license; its campaigns, characters and stories are original.
